MMA College Scholarships awarded for 2008-2009

Top recipient challenges easy “stewardship checklist”

On June 9, 2008, MMA announced the names of 36 promising students who will receive MMA College Scholarships for their education this coming fall.

Through the scholarship program, MMA encourages young people to explore the concept of Christian stewardship, while helping them on their educational journey. To be considered for the awards, 159 students from across the country submitted essays on stewardship and how it influences them today.

Elizabeth Nafziger, Goshen, Ind., winner of MMA’s top scholarship, challenged the easy “stewardship checklist” in her winning essay. Elizabeth wrote that normal stewardship practices may be convenient and fit neatly in our lives, but “stretching stewardship beyond the local community and beyond your immediate timeframe is a magnificently powerful tool.”

“We understand it takes some financial know-how to figure out how to pay for a college education today,” said Phyllis Mishler, administrator of the scholarship program. “We know the costs are high – yet when people invest in further education, they can often more fully put their talents to work. And, MMA is happy to make it a little more affordable for them.”

Nafziger received the $2,500 Howard Brenneman College Scholarship. Three students received $1,500, 10 received $1,000, and 22 received $500 for the 2008-2009 school year. Many of the recipients are attending Anabaptist educational institutions.
