Job Shadowing

Looking back, I really should have taken advantage of job shadowing during my high school years. At my school, there were plenty of college fairs followed by the occasional job fair giving a surface look at a potential dream career. But how do you know if it’s right for you?
Job shadowing might be a good way to find out how you will be using your talents in a certain career. My friend is a great example. She set up a job shadow with a respiratory therapist in a hospital and she loved the experience. Rather then just reading about respiratory therapy in a brochure in the guidance counselor’s office, she was able to see what a typical day was in that career. Not only that, but she was able to make some great connections and gather advice as to which college she should attend.
Some schools offer job shadowing programs. Take advantage of them. If your school doesn’t offer it, set up a job shadow for yourself. I know, it seems intimidating, but the experience is worth it. Your future will thank you.
